Actually a clip.
Just so we’re clear.
With that out of the way, I’m actually going to talk about clips today – well, specifically the Ulticlip in a few different iterations.
Sidenote: it is ULTI clip, not Utili clip, like I kept thinking it was, for anyone else confused.
I originally got these samples at SHOT in order to include in my future knife designs, but thought they were interesting enough on their own to warrant a proper review, so here we are.
The premise of the Ulticlip is that it offers more retention than other clips on the market, whether this is for a knife sheath, a gun holster, or whatever else you need a clip on.
I find myself hard pressed to argue with them there – they even have a delightful video that, after getting hands-on, I completely believe:
The basic gist is they have a unique camming mechanism that positively locks the clip to whatever you’re clipping it on, rather than just depending on the passive springiness of the steel.
It’s quite effective. This leads in to the second selling point of these clips, which is that they allow you to clip on to the jeans directly rather than your belt, thus enabling you to hide the clip itself behind the belt, enhancing concealment.
These are great features, and in my hands-on time, I’d say they’re as advertised. If either of these use cases fit your needs, I’d strongly encourage you to get this product, it’ll work quite nicely.
However (and there’s always a however, isn’t there?), my use case differs slightly, in that I’d like to be able to clip a knife sheath inside my pocket and keep it fairly low profile. Unfortunately, Ulticlip does not currently offer an un-branded clip, so you end up with their name sticking out of your pocket if you use the clip this way.
Not a dealbreaker by any means – I suspect this wasn’t even in their list of expected use cases for these clips, which is probably why they don’t offer them unbranded, but I’d be an even bigger fan if they offered them without branding, or “sanitized” as the lingo goes.
Overall, I’m definitely a fan of these clips especially for their stated purpose. I’m going to start working on incorporating them in to some of my daily carry items and seeing how that goes, and I’ll report back.
