CRKT Seismic – Review and Stress Test (pockets pt. 9)

So first, a bit of a disclaimer – I’m good friends with someone who has connections to the good folks at CRKT, and I was provided this knife by him free of charge.

CRKT Seismic

Alright, with that out of the way, here we go!

We have beat the snot out of the Seismic – it’s been used to baton a piece of hickory ax handle (pushed through with a 1 ton 20 ton [ed note – whoops] shop press), and still shaved my arm hair after the abuse.

As far as testing this new mechanism… we put the blade in a vise and I let my bodyweight hang from the “Deadbolt” mechanism… to no effect. So we decided to hang a couple hundred pound anvil from it, and we got a small scrape on the handle from the chain we used to hang it with.

This mechanism is impressive, and I can’t wait to see it in more knives.

The factory edge on the Seismic is pretty doggone good – I was able to slice some tomatoes for dinner without difficulty, admittedly before the shenanigans above ensued.

Hungry?

Now, because of my fire background, I decided to really push the limits of the knife, and cut some laminated glass (from a windshield) with it.

Chop chop!

This (finally) resulted in a bit of damage! To the blade. Which, if you know anything about metal or glass, you’ll understand is very much expected. Here’s a photo of the carnage:

Ouchies

Honestly, not terrible considering how awful glass is to knife edges. I of course sharpened it right back to a good edge and haven’t had an issue.

I’m thoroughly impressed with this knife and particularly with the locking system – it keeps fingers out of the blade path and is as strong or stronger than most conventional locks on the market today.

It will also be interesting to watch and see what other knives come out with this system – the Clever Girl folder is already out with it (and D2 tool steel), but I’m not sure what additional plans they have for the system (yes I know the Xoc is out too but that’s a $750 knife that most people won’t even consider buying).

My plan is to get hands on a Clever Girl folder next, so look for that review sometime this coming year. That’s all I’ve got for now, thanks for reading!
