Gerber, baby. (pockets pt. 11)

It’s my Gerber, baby.
This is the Gerber Baby. Big difference.

…but I digress. The point is, aside from some absolute waste of oxygen who borrowed my corkscrew once and destroyed that tool by bending it (?!??? – yes I’m still mad about it), this tool has been completely reliable for years.

I don’t even honestly know their policy on repairs, I never did get around to asking about it. Regardless, this is a variation on the Gerber MP600 multi-tool – I have an MP600 as well that lives in my bunker gear at work, I think the model with the corkscrew is discontinued now, but I could be wildly wrong. That said, despite my white-hot fury at how it broke, I’ve never actually used, or missed, the dogggone thing anyway.

Both of these tools have been used and (in some cases) abused, and have held up admirably. The pair in my bunker gear has developed some surface rust, but in fairness to the tool, it not only goes from warm to cold quite regularly particularly in the winter, but also deals with a lot of high humidity and wet environments.

I know plenty of folks are diehard Leatherman users, and others swear by Gerber. I like the Gerber “flick to open” feature that the MP600 has for one-handed opening, but outside of that I have no particular fealty to either brand – my friends who have Leathermans have reported similar experiences to mine with my Gerber, and in fact, I just got a Leatherman MUT for Christmas, so look for a review of that bad boy soon!

The big take-home point for me here is simply to have a quality multitool and keep it in your bag or on your person so you can use it when you need it!

That’s all for today, thanks for reading!
