Yes, I’m a Light Nerd

Thanks for noticing.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a big fan of Nightstick. If you followed that link, you could probably (correctly) guess that the light in this post is waterproof but not intrinsic safe (for an explanation, read that post).

This is the NSR-9920XL model – it’s a rechargeable light (came with a wall charger), and it has a magnet in the base that holds the whole weight of the light (very useful). It’s also got the Nightstick two light arrangement – one longer throw light and one floodlight at a right angle to the main axis of the light.

See? Neat, right?

They’re both pretty bright, but the throw distance on the flood beam is unsurprisingly fairly limited. Still, it’s quite useful, especially when paired with the tailcap magnet.

The main beam has a very nice throw, and it’s quite simple to see which switch controls which light – they’re both separate switches, and the one closest to the front of the light controls the main beam. Not rocket surgery.

I also want to call out Nightstick’s customer service chops in this post – I previously had a very similar light, but had an issue I won’t go in to great detail about, but the gist is, it was not their fault at all. I contacted their customer service folks, making it clear that the issue was my fault, and they very kindly helped me out, and I now have a brand-new light at minimal cost to me.

I’d definitely recommend this light as a shop light or a vehicle light – it’s a touch large for regular carry, and it’s probably not tactical black enough for LE use (and it lacks a tail switch because of the magnet, which is also a feature most LE folks will probably want).

Incidentally, I visited their booth at SHOT, and like an idiot took no photos at all. Regardless, they have some pretty slick looking new weapon mount lights – in my last post about WMLs, I didn’t recommend any Nightstick lights, but only because I haven’t had enough hands-on time. Also, some of the new ones they had at the show also had integrated lasers. I’m excited to see how they turn out!

I suspect they’re likely to be very good, but can’t recommend them without any trigger time (Nightstick folks, if you’re reading this, reach out and let’s get something set up).
