My Only Emerson

Is a Kershaw.

No, really, look at it. It’s a Kershaw Emerson CQC-5K series knife – it’s made by the folks at Kershaw, using technology (read: patents) from Emerson Knives.

In particular, they use the Emerson Wave feature, which allows for rapid deployment from a pocket, just like the DPX knife I reviewed previously.

Easy deployment. So easy, it can come open on the carpet if you toss it to someone. Don’t ask.

In fact, one of my primary concerns when I first got it was whether or not I could get it out of my pocket without opening it. Turns out, yes you can.

See? Simple.

Other than this feature, there’s really very little that’s remarkable about this knife. It does ride rather high in the pocket – helpful for deployment, not especially helpful for being low profile.

The biggest thing going for this knife is it’s usually priced around $40, with occasional forays below that, so if you really like the Wave feature, this is a nice low-cost way to get in to the game.

At some stage I’d like to get a proper Emerson knife – not only am I a fan of a lot of their designs, I had the pleasure of meeting Ernie at Blade show last year, and he’s just a genuinely nice and knowledgeable guy, which is the kind of person I much prefer to support with my dollars.

Until such a time as I can afford one of those, I’ll content myself with this little guy.
