M16? Not quite…

So, as I discussed in my previous post, I got to see and get hands-on with some new releases from companies like CRKT.

This, as you can see, is the M40-02 Tanto knife. It’s a new release from CRKT, and I was able to get my grubby mitts on it at SHOT.

The first thing I noticed (see header image) is the deep carry pocket clip. This is in contrast to the M16 series of knives, which has a somewhat higher ride. I’m personally a big fan of the low ride, especially for a general use knife like this one – it rides similarly to the DPX H.E.S.T. I reviewed earlier.

Of course, the key feature of this knife is really the Deadbolt mechanism, as I highlighted in my review of the CRKT Seismic. I had the privilege to spend some time at SHOT talking with the designer of the Deadbolt, Flavio Ikoma, and learned quite a bit about the mechanism and what makes it so strong (short version – the two massive lugs that go through the blade).

It also has the advantage of keeping your fingers out of the blade path, rather than conventional folding systems that require a finger to get in the way. There’s also a small adjustment screw available, if you know where to look, that allows you to adjust how easily the knife opens and shuts. Don’t try this part at home, kids.

Thoughtfully there’s a bit of knurling on the Deadbolt button, which is a nice finishing touch. The knife looks sharp overall (ha), and has a modern but rugged aesthetic to it.

I’m interested to see some more iterations soon…

Like this -03 spear point I was fond of (though admittedly I have a bias against Tanto blades for personal reasons, namely they’re a pain to sharpen), or the beefy -15 with Veff serrations below.

I know there are more M16 variations than you can shake a stick at, so I’m hopeful that the good folks at CRKT will be putting out more flavors of the M40 as well – I’m excited to see what’s in store!
